Strong second period lifts Great Falls to victory over Bozeman

GREAT FALLS, Mont., January 17, 2014 — The Great Falls Americans, second in the AWHL standings, used a four-goal second period to help secure a 6-3 win over the last-place Bozeman Ice Dogs with a great crowd of 882 on hand to watch the AWHL matchup on Friday night.

Frank Sabato registered the first goal of the game with 7:51 left in the first period with the assistance of Nathan Luznar-Purdy and Steven Nisbet. Despite trailing Bozeman 1-0 after the first period, the Americans out-shot the Ice Dogs 13-8.

Great Falls’ offense got going in the middle period by adding four consecutive goals with Steven Goran, Cody Page, Johnathan Carpenter and Tanner Doty each supplying a goal apiece for coach Jeff Heimel’s squad. Seven Americans assisted on the goals including Steven Goran, Paul Sartuche, Dylan Garton, Johnathan Carpenter, Aaron McInnis, Bridger Strong and Austin Krantz. After two periods of action, Great Falls kept Bozeman goaltender Zach Skop busy as the Americans were able to out-shoot the Ice Dogs 34-12.

Great Falls extended their lead to 5-1 as Aaron McInnis, second in the league in scoring, answered with his 24th goal of the season off a pass from Zachary Mese and Lucas Stover with 6:44 remaining in the game. Bozeman cut the deficit to 5-2 as Gunnar Mogck got the puck past Americans goaltender Evan Hauser a few minutes later. Jason Demczak and Ryan Erickson were credited with the assists. Great Falls added an extra goal from Zachary Mese with 3:18 left and McInnis and Page added another assist to their season total to give the Americans a four point lead. Helena native Jake Nelson scored the final goal of the game for Bozeman. Ryan Erickson added his second assist of the period in a losing effort.

The Americans and Ice Dogs combined for 80 shots on goal including 34 shots coming in the second period for Great Falls. Neither team allowed any goals to be scored on power play opportunities.

Great Falls goaltender Evan Hauser rejected 22 of Bozeman’s 25 shot attempts while Bozeman’s Zach Skop added 49 saves.

Great Falls currently sits in second place behind Helena in the AWHL standings at 26-6-2. Bozeman is now 4-25-2 and is in last place in the AWHL’s seven team league.

NEXT CONTEST: The Americans return to the Great Falls Ice Plex on Thursday night (January 23rd) to face the Glacier Nationals. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
