McInnis and Garton combine for five goals in win over Bozeman

By Kevin Scott

BOZEMAN, Mont., February 22, 2014 — The Great Falls Americans found the back of the net seven times in the final two periods of action to defeat the struggling Bozeman Ice Dogs 7-1 at Haynes Pavilion on Saturday night in the Americans only game of the week. Dylan Garton had a hat trick by scoring three consecutive goals in the third period including two on power play opportunities while teammate Aaron McInnis scored a pair of goals to add to his season total of 27.

Both defenses were able to keep their opponent’s offenses from scoring in the first period. Great Falls had a 10-4 advantage on shots on goal.

The Americans offense came alive in the second period by scoring four goals. The Americans had a 3-0 lead within the first three minutes as Steven Goran, Lucas Lomax, and Aaron McInnis each picked up goals. Dylan Garton, Connor Barta, Cody Page, Max Kaercher, goalie Evan Hauser and newcomer Trent Carter each assisted on the scoring drives for coach Jeff Heimel’s team. Carter, who was acquired in a trade on February 6th from the Yellowstone Quake, earned his first assist as an American on Goran’s goal. McInnis would tally a short-handed unassisted goal midway through the second period as the Americans led the host Ice Dogs 4-0.

Dylan Garton racked up three consecutive goals in the third to put the Americans in control (6-0) before Bozeman’s Jake Nelson scored the lone unassisted goal for the Bozeman franchise to avoid the shutout. Brady Christiaens picked up two assists in Garton’s first two scores while Cody Page secured his second assist of the evening followed by Lucas Lomax and Bridger Strong each with one.

The Great Falls offense kept Bozeman goaltender Zach Skop busy throughout the AWHL contest as he recorded 28 saves but allowed seven goals in all sixty minutes of action. Evan Hauser of Great Falls allowed only one score and registered 15 saves. The second place Americans had more than doubled their shots on goal (35-16) against Bozeman.

Great Falls along with top-ranked Helena and Gillette have all qualified for post-season play while Glacier and Billings fight for the final spot in the AWHL Playoffs set for the middle of March.

On a side note, Great Falls continues to lead the league in attendance by averaging 682 fans per contest.

NEXT CONTEST: The Americans will return to the Great Falls Ice Plex for three of their final four contests including hosting the Billings Bulls on Sunday, March 2nd.
