Christiaens shines in Americans overtime victory

By Kevin Scott

WHITEFISH, Mont., January 10, 2014 — After posting a 3-0 shutout over the Gillette Wild in Wyoming last Saturday night, the Americans continued their victories on the road with a 5-4 win in overtime against a tough Glacier Nationals team in Whitefish, MT.  Great Falls opened up the scoring drive against the Nationals on Friday night with two goals in the first period as Brady Christiaens and Paul Sartuche both found the back of the net for points. Great Falls out-shot the host team 23-8 after 20 minutes of action. Aaron McInnis, Donovan Mattfeldt, Erik Gatson and Lucas Lomax contributed the assists on Great Falls’ two goals.

After a Doug Keller score for the Americans, the Nationals reeled off three straight points in the middle period to tie up the contest at 3-3. Tyler Latimer, Tanner Dodd, and Chris Cutshall each tallied goals for Glacier. Four Glacier players assisted on those goals including Padraic Ripple, Tyler Latimer, Paul Kinder and Brett Fernandez added two assists.

Austin Givens gave the Glacier franchise their first lead of the game (4-3) on a pass from Tucker Spooner and Chris Cutshall with 9:22 remaining in regulation. The lead for the Nationals would be short-lived as Aaron McInnis tied the contest five minutes later. Brady Christiaens and Bridger Strong were credited with the assists on what turned out to be the goal that sent the AWHL contest into overtime.

In the five minute overtime session, Christiaens provided the game-winning goal with help from McInnis and Connor Barta to give Great Falls the win with 4:32 left in the first overtime.  This was Christiaens second goal of the evening and eleventh on the season.

The Americans recorded 23 of their 55 shots on goal in the first period while Glacier finished with 34 total shots including 13 in the second and third periods. Glacier’s first goal by Tyler Latimer in the second period was the only power play goal for either team. Great Falls went unsuccessful in seven tries on power plays.

Both of the Americans goalies contributed to the overtime win. Evan Hauser and Erik Powell combined for 30 saves. Despite the loss, Pierre Gustafsson rejected 50 shots on goal for Glacier.
