Americans hang on in the final period to defeat Yellowstone 5-3

GREAT FALLS, Mont., October 18, 2013 — The Great Falls Americans recorded two goals in the final nine minutes to defeat the Yellowstone (WY) Quake 5-3 in a tight AWHL game on Friday night in front of 685 fans at the Great Falls Ice Plex.

A power play goal by Lucas Lomax in the first 1:45 of the opening period put the Americans in front first but that lead would be short-lived as Sawyer Scanlan tied the game up eighteen seconds later. Tommy Toohey gave the Cody, Wyoming club their first lead as he found the back of the net. Jimmy Tich recorded his second assist on the power play goal. Aaron McInnis scored his eight goal of the season to finish off the period with each team recording two goals.

The Americans of coach Jeff Heimel added one goal forty eight seconds into the second period to increase their lead to 3-2 as Zachary Mese and Brady Christiaens found Cody Page open for the score over Yellowstone goalie Sean Leahy.

Jimmy Tich’s short-handed goal tied the AWHL contest up at 3-3 for the Wyoming franchise. Erik Gatson and Steven Goran each scored a goal to secure the victory for Great Falls. Goran and Lucas Lomax led the team with one goal and two assists for the night.

The Americans racked up 45 shots on goal while Yellowstone finished with 29. Goaltender Evan Hauser stopped 26 shots by the Quake. Sean Leahy had 40 saves on the night as both teams incurred 14 minutes in penalties. Lomax and McInnis’ scored on power play opportunities in the first period for the league leadings Americans.

Great Falls lead the AWHL standings with a 7-0 record while Yellowstone falls to fifth place with a 3-5-1 record.

NEXT CONTEST: Great Falls will remain at home on Saturday October 19th with game two of the series against the Yellowstone Quake (Cody, WY) at 7:30 p.m.
